Janine Ellis

Psychotherapeutic Counsellor (MA, MBACP (Reg)) she / they

About me

I am a fully qualified psychotherapeutic integrative counsellor. I provide therapy to adults and young people over 18 years old. I hold a Masters with distinction in Integrative Counselling and am a registered member of the BACP. As well as my private practice, I work as a relationship counsellor for Relate Bradford & Leeds. My approach is principally relational and person-centred. This means that building genuine trust and respect in our therapeutic relationship, free from judgement, is my priority. I may also draw from other counselling theories such as CBT, psychodynamic, transactional analysis and feminist therapy. The research element of my Masters degree focused on working therapeutically with clients who have experienced sexism or misogyny working in the music industry. My interest in this area was informed by myself as a feminist/researcher with experience of working in the music industry. My practice is anti-racist, LGBTQ+ aware and inclusive.

My background

I have worked in the independent music industry for over twenty years. I started out as an intern at MTV before going on to work in product and retail for various cult independent record labels (Wichita, Rough Trade and Warp Records) as well as in marketing at label and artist services (PIAS and Kartel). Here, I worked on various top ten albums such as Bloc Party’s “A Weekend In The City”, Belle and Sebastian’s “Write About Love”, Temples’ “Sun Structures” and Squid’s “Bright Green Field”. Given my distinct experience in the music community, I now provide mental health support to musicians and music industry professionals nationwide, as I understand the complex and unique set of challenges this client group faces.  I am also on the board of advisors for Launchpad Music who support the music sector across Yorkshire with funding, advice and opportunities.

Working with me

I adapt my approach to meet each client’s individual needs by working pluralistically. It is my belief that we are all unique and complex beings so collaboration and client preference are key aspects of my approach. If you arrive at our first session with clear goals, I will make sure we focus on these and may provide techniques to help manage any symptoms. Alternatively, if you don’t know, feel confused, or stuck, we can sit with that and explore those difficult feelings to find a way through. We can explore any unhelpful patterns, such as in relationships and look at the root causes of this and what might help you going forward. I do not give advice or direction as I believe you are the expert in your own life and have the resources within yourself to make the changes you wish to see.
