Jodi Milstein
Psychotherapist (MA, LMFT, LPCC) she/her
About me
I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and Licensed Professional Clinical Counsellor with a successful private psychotherapy practice in Los Angeles, California. I am also the Founder and Owner of RockStarTherapy, a division of my practice focused on helping music industry professionals, musicians, artists, and bands improve their professional and personal relationships as well as band dynamics. I have extensive professional experience in addiction, substance abuse, eating disorders, relationship issues, life transitions, conflict resolution as well as working with creative individuals in many areas of the entertainment industry. I contributed a chapter entitled, “Anger Management and Conflict Resolution” to the ground-breaking book MITC released March 2023, “Touring and Mental Health: The Music Industry Manual”, published by Omnibus Press and sponsored by Live Nation.
I often do speaking engagements. I lead workshops for record labels, management companies, and agencies. I have been featured and quoted in several online & print articles, appeared on radio shows, podcasts, and panels at conferences including: Billboard Magazine, The Wall Street Journal, The Los Angeles Times, Rolling Stone Magazine, Grammy.com, Vice.com, Consequence of Sound, The Lawyer That Rocks, Women in Music (WIM), The Back Lounge, Backline, Emanate Mental Health in the Creative World, Nvak Foundation, Folk Expo, International Live Music Conference (ILMC), National Independent Venue Association (NIVA).
My background
I have unique insight into the complex issues creative individuals encounter, especially those in the music industry. Although I have spent nearly two decades practicing as a psychotherapist, the first 15 years of my professional life were in the music industry. I worked directly with musicians, artists, bands, managers, agents, and producers at A&M Records and music management companies in the 90’s and early 2000’s. I spent a great deal of time on the road touring with artists as well as in recording studios during recording sessions. Musicians and the teams around them live very different lives than the typical working professional. Long period of time spent away from family and friends while isolated in touring vehicles and dark recording studios can take their toll.
I witnessed firsthand musicians struggling in their professional and personal lives due to mental health challenges, substance abuse, relationship issues, and communication difficulties. That exposure gave me firsthand understanding of the rewards, challenges, and demands musicians and their families face. My specialty is combining my music industry knowledge and experience along with my expertise as a therapist to help musicians incorporate self-care in their lives, address mental health needs, and work on healthier communication while enabling them to maintain their creative edge.
