John Bassett
Counsellor (MBACP) he/him
About me
I am a fully-qualified Psychodynamic Counsellor, in my 8th year of private practice. I work with individual adults of all ages. Over that time I have worked with various musicians and people within the industry, dealing with challenges such as touring (offering sessions pre/during/post tours), financial issues, fallout from band break-ups and also the knock-on effects of the music industry and how it impacts on all other aspects of life.
My background
Having worked in the music industry in various roles for nearly 20 years, I pivoted to a career in psychotherapy, but always felt there would be a way to weave new skills into my previous profession, and MITC provides that. The clients I have worked with so far have all presented unique challenges and come from all parts of the industry, and I look to use my experience, resilience and natural personable nature to help each client find their own best way through. Whether it is through long-term open-ended sessions or a short-term piece of specific work, I provide safe, confidential counselling with industry knowledge, empathy and integrity.
Working with me
I always begin with an hour-long assessment in order for us both to decide if we are a good fit to work on together. If we are, I usually work in 50-minute face-to-face sessions. I tend to not be too probing or direct, allowing us to find our own rhythm with gentle guidance rather than strict agendas and tasks. My preference is to work on an open-ended basis, but appreciate that time-limited is often the more realistic option.
